Sabrina's Law on Allergy Policies for Schools takes effect in 2006
Sabrina's Law, introduced by Dave Levac, MPP for Brant, and passed unanimously on May 16, 2005, requires every school board to establish and maintain an anaphylaxis policy. The legislation requires school boards to have policies that include:
• Training for school staff on dealing with life-threatening allergies on a regular basis;
• Creating individual plans for pupils who have an anaphylaxis allergy;
• Having emergency procedures in place for anaphylactic pupils.
Sabrina's Law is named after Sabrina Shannon, a 13-year old student from Pembroke with a severe dairy allergy who died after eating french fries containing traces of cheese from her school's cafeteria. The law, which is the first of its kind in Canada, will take effect on January 1, 2006.
